Don't Fall Into the Lies!
Answers to Skeptics' Top Ten Questions and Objections Regarding Hell
In our time together tonight I want to take up a doctrine of the Christian faith that has been the focus of many questions and criticisms by atheists and critics of the Christian faith. The topic I want to talk to you about is: Hell.
The Bible has a lot to say about Hell. The Bible describes Hell as a place of...
• outer darkness (Matthew 25:30)
• weeping (Matthew 8:12)
• wailing (Matthew 13:42)
• gnashing of teeth (Matthew 13:50)
• flames (Luke 16:24)
• everlasting fire (Matthew 25:46)
• a furnace of fire (Matthew 13:42)
• separation from the righteous (Matthew 25:46)
• eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord (2 Thessalonians 1:9)
• torment (Luke 16:23)
• everlasting punishment (Matthew 25:46)
• the lake of fire burning with brimstone (Revelation 19:20)
Just as the Bible goes to great lengths to describe the glories of Heaven, the Bible seems to exhaust the human language describing just how awful Hell will be. Question for you: Who said these things about Hell?
Peter? No.
Luke? No.
All but two of these descriptions were uttered by Jesus Himself. I tell you that because I have heard people say, “I don’t believe in all that Hell stuff! Jesus never talked about Hell.” Well, apparently they haven’t been reading their Bibles. Jesus made mention of Hell and a coming judgment more than 70 times. Jesus had more to say about Hell than He did about Heaven! And Jesus made it absolutely clear that people who refuse to repent, who turn away God’s provision of forgiveness and salvation, will spend eternity separated from God in a place of conscious torment that He often called “Hell” (Matthew 5:29). Now in spite of the Bible's clarity on this issue, Satan has deceived millions of people into believing a variety of other "softer" options. Satan, "the father of lies" (John 8:44), never ceases to take advantage of those who are willing to lay aside Biblical revelation for something that is more palatable.
And so today, millions of Jehovah's Witnesses and Seventh Day Adventists believe in annihilationism. They believe that God will annihilate the unrighteous and they will simply cease to exist.
Buddhists, Hindus, Hare Krishnas, and those who hold to the teachings of the New Age Religion believe in reincarnation. Reincarnation is the belief that upon death, the soul migrates (moves on) to inhabit another life form (an animal, insect, or human depending on your "karma").
The Mormon Church also denies the Biblical teaching on Hell, and teaches that all, even the worst of sinners, will find a place in the lower levels of Heaven.
Others in the "Emerging" Church movement are buying into something called Universalism. Universalism is the belief that because of Jesus' death on the cross, all people will eventually be saved. So there are a wide variety of beliefs that people have bought into. The lie behind all of these unbiblical beliefs is this: "There's no need to be concerned about what awaits you or others after death." That is the lie (“It’s not important to really even consider what happens after death. Eat, drink and be merry. Live it up. It will all work out in the end”).Now, not only have many people rejected what the Bible has to say about Hell (opting for a softer view), skeptics and critics of Christianity are posing some difficult...
